A Horse in the Country

Michael Timmins

[A] [E] [Bm]
[A] The money would be pretty good
if a [E] quart of milk were still a dollar
[Bm] Or even if a quart of milk were [A] still a quart.
And the [D] hours, well, I don't mind
how they [A] creep on by like an old love of mine
it's [Bm] the years that simply [E] disappear
that are doing me [A] in.

[D] Guess I [E] married too young,
yeah, [A] nineteen was just too [D] young,
[Bm] but sometimes you meet someone
and your [A] guts just burn.
[D] It's not that I don't love him [E] anymore
it's just [A] that when I hear him
coming [D] through that front door
my [Bm] heart doesn't [E] race like it did once [A] before.

[D] Mmmmmmm.......But I've got a [Dm] horse out in the [A] country.
Ahhh [Bm] yeah, I get to [E] see him [D] every second [A] Sunday.
[D] He comes when I [Bm] call him,
[Dm] yeah, he knows his [A] name.
[Bm] Some day I'll [E] saddle up
and the [Bm] two of us will [E] ride [A] away. [E] [Bm]

[A] This weather I could almost stand
if the [E] sun would shine a little brighter
[Bm] or even if the sun would shine at [A] all.
[D] But lately it [E] seems to me
that this [A] life has lost its [D] mystery
and these [Bm] cold fall mornings seem to [E] bite
just a little bit [A] harder.

[Bm] And all my friends have [Dbm] settled down
become [Bm] mothers and fathers
[A] without a sound.
Except for [E] Cathy,
she bought a [D] one way sub- [E] way ticket
and left us [A] all behind.

[D] Mmmmmmm.......But I got a [Dm] horse out in the [A] country.
[E] [Bm]

[A] This town wouldn't be so bad
if a [E] girl could trust her instincts
[Bm] or even if a [E] girl could trust a [A] boy.
