A Few Simple Words
Margo and Michael Timmins

[G] What does he see in those mashed [C] potatoes?
What [G] secrets does he hold that can be so [D] grim?
[G] The silence like a canyon dividing them
[C] he’s on one side she’s opposite him
[D] trying so desperate- [C] ly to get his [G] attention.

She says, “Honey, you’re a bastard of great [C] proportion.”
He says, [G] “Darling, I plead guilty to that [D] sin.”
With [G] potatoes half way to his mouth
he [C] looks her in the eye and says,
“Without a doubt my [D] love for you is [C] all that I [G] believe in.”

With those [C] few simple [G] words her [C] heart is sent [D] soaring
she’s [C] able to [G] face another [D] day. Through the [C] anger and the [G] laughter
she [C] knows that she [D] matters and somebody [C] out there [G] cares.

What does she gain by all this [C] sulking?
What [G] trouble can there be for one so [D] young?
[G] Dark tension building like the clouds of a storm
[C] her daughter’s in her room and she’s at the door
[D] trying to figure [C] out what all this [G] fuss is for.

She says, “Mother, you’re a witch
and I’ll always hate [C] you”.
She says, [G] “Daughter, perhaps these words
you speak are [D] true”.
[G] She quietly moves towards the bed,
[C] looks her in the eye gently says,
[D] “But I will [C] always believe [G] in you”.

With those [C] few simple [G] words her [C] heart is sent [D] soaring
she’s [C] able to [G] face another [D] day. Through the [C] anger and the [G] laughter
she [C] knows that she [D] matters and somebody [C] out there [G] cares.

[G] What do we need to keep us [C] going?
[G] What do we crave at the end of the [D] day?
[G] Mysteries keep piling like dirty clothes in the corner.
[C] You never thought you’d give up, but you’re beginning to wonder
[D] when through the gloom you [C] hear a familiar voice [G] say….

…. [C] a few simple [G] words
your [C] heart is sent [D] soaring
you’re [C] able to [G] face another [D] day.
Through the [C] anger and the [G] laughter
you [C] know that you [D] matter
and somebody [C] out there [G] cares.

[C] a few simple [G] words
your [C] heart is sent [D] soaring
you’re [C] able to [G] face another [D] day.
Through the [C] anger and the [G] laughter
you [C] know that you [D] matter
and somebody [C] out there [G] cares. [C] [G]
