Leaving Normal
Michael Timmins

[D]

It’s been a [D] long time since I’ve seen
the [G] high plains of Expec- [D] tation
and I’m [G] way past the lowlands
and the deserts of Failure and [D] Doubt
and the [G] last time I passed through [A] Satisfaction
I [D] didn’t recognize a single soul [G] there,
[D] now I’m leaving [A] Normal
and I’m [G] heading for who knows [D] where.

“Excuse me [D] mister is that seat [G] taken
can I put my bag [D] over here.
You know, this [G] trip would go a whole lot smoother
if you took your [D] hand from there.
[G] No I’m not from [A] around here
and my [D] name’s not little [G] darlin,”
[D] why’s there one in every [A] crowd
and [G] why do I [D] attract them.

[A] Funny how the smell of a [G] Greyhound bus now [D]
smells like a fresh start to [A] me
and how the sound of the steelbelts on the [G] blacktop is now
the [D] sound of breaking [A] free,
but [D] I’d trade all those [G] cancelled tickets
for a [D] single return [A] fare
to a [G] station with a loved one waiting [D] there.

Instrumental on verse

I’ve [G] finally learned that there’s good and bad
and that a girl can do some [Bm] choosing.
Of [A] that I’m glad ’cause this [G] heart and face
won’t take anymore [A] bruising.
And the [G] next time I fall into another’s arms
there’s one thing of which I’ll be [Bm] certain
that he can [A] bear the weight of the [G] love I give
without considering it a [A] burden.

It’s been a [D] long since I’ve seen
the [G] high plains of Expec- [D] tation
and I’m [G] way past the lowlands and
the deserts of Failure and [D] Doubt
and the [G] last time I passed through [A] Satisfaction
I [D] felt like a stranger [G] there,
[D] now I’m leaving [A] Normal
and I’m [G] heading for who knows [D] where.

Now I’m leaving [A] Normal
wherever I’m [G] headed well I don’t [D] care.
